On April 22 of this year, during the election process held in New York for the membership of the United Nations Statistical Commission for the 2026–2029 term, Uzbekistan was unanimously elected as a member of this body for the first time in its history.
For reference, the Statistical Commission was established in 1946 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as a functional commission. It serves as the primary intergovernmental body responsible for setting the direction for the development of international statistics. The Commission coordinates work on universal statistical standards and methodological principles.
The Commission is composed of 24 member states, which are elected every four years, taking into account geographic distribution.
On April 22, the Chairman of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Statistics met with Mr. Stefan Schweinfest, Director of the UN Statistics Division. During the meeting, the parties discussed advancing the statistical system in Uzbekistan, transforming the national statistics authority, aligning methodologies with international standards and recommendations, improving staff capacity, and organizing population and agricultural censuses. Mr. Schweinfest acknowledged Uzbekistan’s membership in the UN Statistical Commission for the first time.
Full membership in the Statistical Commission opens broad opportunities for Uzbekistan to participate in shaping global statistical policies, showcase national reforms and achievements, learn from advanced international experiences, and strengthen international cooperation.
Uzbekistan’s election to this body reflects international recognition of the large-scale reforms being implemented under the leadership of the President and highlights the country's growing role in global processes.
